Dear Alumni and Friends,
Mr. HASAN UZ Zaman (IE&M, 1983), and ex-AIT Research Engineer, has died on Saturday morning, 18 July 2020, due to complications following an operation in Melbourne, Australia in the previous week. He was suffering from Colon Cancer. Mr. Zaman was approximately 64 years of age and lived in Australia since 1986. He was buried in Melbourne’s Dandenong Cemeteries on midday Sunday, 19 July 2020.
Mr Hasan Zaman was a Mechanical Engineering graduate from BUET, Bangladesh (1981), left his brilliant engineering career years ago, and has since been a successful businessman in Australia.
He left his wife Hasina Yasmin Shumi (also an AIT ET 1984 graduate), and only child (a daughter) Farzana, a young medical doctor.
May his soul rest in eternal peace, Ameen! Please pray for his departed soul.

Thank you kindly Sanjeev for keeping us informed and updated. It is indeed sad that Prof North Passed away. He was well (uniformly) liked and admired, a very good inspirational leader and orator.
I still remember my Graduation Day speech he has given on 13 Dec 1985 as the Institute President. I was a student when he was the President, and worked there when he was in the same position of course. A great inquisitive mind and leader. May God keep his soul in eternal peace, Amen!. I posted a piece in my FB account as many AIT alumni are linked to me, with significant comments received on him to date.

Dear Alumni and Friends,
‘Mr Mokhlesur Rahman (Mukul), ENV 1989 graduate, originally from Bangladesh, but was living in Sydney, sadly passed away suddenly on Saturday, 2 May 2020 in Sydney’s Westmead hospital due to a heart attack. He was 55.
Mr Rahman was working at Central Coast Council in NSW, just north of Sydney a water quality Engineer. Earlier he had worked at Sydney Water Corporation between 1991 to 2012 as a Modelling Engineer (Water and Wastewater).
He left his wife Nigar Afroza, also an Engineer from BUET, Dhaka, Bangladesh’ and 2 teenage sons, Nile and Ronel; as well as many AIT Alumni and other friends in Sydney, and extended family and relatives in Bangladesh.
He was buried the following day on Sunday, 3 May 2020 at Western Sydney’s Kemps Creek Cemeteries.
Please pray for his departed soul.

I am shocked with this very sad news! We received our Certificate of Graduation from him in Aug 1996 while he was the President of AIT. I express my deep condolence to the bereaved family, friends, relatives of late Dr. North and the entire AIT family. May his departed soul rest in peace in the Heaven. Its really heart touching to hear the news on the death of Professor North who stood by AIT in the ups and downs. We the Aluminise of Bhutan would pray for his departed soul by offering 1000 butter lamps at the Monastery.

This is really a very sad and painful moment for the AIT community. Prof. North was a real hero for AIT's development who dedicated precious years of his most productive life. My heartfelt prayers in the name of departed soul and sincerest condolences to the bereaved family members and friends of the departed soul. May the departed soul rest in eternal peace, and the mourning family members garner adequate strength and support to bear this irreparable loss at this most difficult time.

Dear AIT Alumni and Friends, It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing away of former AIT President Prof. Alastair Macarthur North. He passed away peacefully at his home in Bangkok, Thailand on 4 July 2020. He was 88 years old.
Prof. North was the longest serving president in the history of AIT, serving from 1983 until his retirement in 1996. Prof. North’s last formal engagement at AIT was as a panelist speaker at the H.E. Dr. Thanat Khoman Lecture Series held at the AIT Robert B. Banks Auditorium on 20 February 2018.
Prior to joining AIT, Prof. North was the Deputy Principal of the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom. AIT President Eden Woon noted Prof. North’s stellar academic career spanning Scotland and Thailand when he spoke on June 16 at an international webinar hosted by the University of Strathclyde.
President Woon said: “We at AIT are saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Alastair North. He was at the helm of AIT for 13 years at a time of AIT’s glory, and we thank him for his dedication and efforts and devotion to AIT. I know that those who came across him at that time, whether students or faculty or staff, remember him well as a leader, a scholar, and a gentleman, and appreciate his contributions to AIT. We offer our sincerest condolence to his family members.”
President North’s work in AIT was recognized by the honours of the Officer in the Most Illustrious Order of the British Empire (U.K.), Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques (France), Commander in the Order of King Leopold II (Belgium), Prasidda Prabala Gorkha Dakshin Bahu (Nepal) and the Honorary Degrees: Doctor of Philosophy (Ramkhamhaeng University, honoris causa, Thailand), Doctor of the University (University of Strathclyde, honoris causa, U.K.), Docteur Honoris Causa (Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, France), Doctor of Technology (AIT, honoris causa) and Doctor of Laws (Aberdeen, honoris causa). He was also appointed as a visiting professor at Chiang Mai University and Mahidol University in Thailand.
AIT shall share the details on the arrangements for the funeral arrangements, for those who would like to attend the religious rites ceremony.
